Which documents are needed to apply for the licence B?

The basic list is the same for driving-school pupils and private candidates. With a driving school, the school files the paperwork; a private candidate takes it to the Motorizzazione counter, usually by appointment. The instructions published by the offices on Portale dell'Automobilista ask for these attachments.

Which deadlines should you remember?

The dates fall into two groups: those of the preparation stage, which run at the same time and must be fitted together carefully, and those of the issued licence, which depend on age. The medical certificate periods come from the Motorizzazione instructions and article 119 of the Codice della Strada; the application, foglio rosa and attempts from articles 121 and 122.

How often is the licence B renewed?

Licence B validity by age, article 126 of the Codice della Strada
Age at issue or confirmationValidity
Up to 5010 years
Over 505 years
Over 703 years
From age 802 years

What counts is age at issue or confirmation. Someone renewing at 48 receives a licence valid for ten years; someone renewing at 52 receives one valid for five. The expiry date is printed on the card, at field 4b.

How is the licence B renewed?

  1. Book the visit with an authorised doctor or the ASL, before expiry.
  2. Bring the documents the provider asks for: usually the licence, an ID document and photographs. Payments and amounts should be asked of the provider, because they are not listed in the fee schedule consulted for renewal.
  3. Have the result sent: the doctor sends the result to Motorizzazione, as article 126, paragraph 8, provides.
  4. Receive the new licence by post: as a rule, Motorizzazione posts the holder a new licence with the new expiry date.

Driving with an expired licence is sanctioned by article 126, paragraph 11, with a fine of 158 to 638 euro and withdrawal of the licence.

If a shopkeeper in Genoa puts off the medical and is stopped a week after expiry, he pays 158 to 638 euro and the licence is withdrawn (article 126, paragraph 11, of the Codice della Strada). He can drive again only once renewal is complete.

What should you do if the licence is lost or stolen?

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport page, the report must be filed with the police within 48 hours, bringing a valid ID document and two recent photographs. A provisional driving permit is issued, valid only in Italy, which lapses when the duplicate arrives and in any case after 90 days. From the moment the permit is issued the old licence is no longer valid: if found, it must be destroyed. A report filed abroad must be repeated in Italy.

What happens if...?

If a student in Naples has her medical in January and applies in May, the office will not accept the certificate, which is more than three months old (article 119, paragraph 3, of the Codice della Strada): she must repeat the visit before applying.

If a candidate in Palermo fails theory twice within the six months, the application allows no further attempts (article 122 of the Codice della Strada): he must file a new one, with a new payment and a medical certificate still within its time limit.

If a driver in Verona renews his licence at 51, the new licence is valid for five years, not ten, because he is over 50 at confirmation (article 126 of the Codice della Strada).

A retired woman in Florence has her wallet stolen with her licence. She files a report within 48 hours with ID and two photographs, receives the provisional permit and can drive in Italy until the duplicate arrives, for no more than 90 days.
