Italian driving licence glossary
The vocabulary of the Italian licence, A to Z: 51 terms and abbreviations that turn up in the exam questions and in Motorizzazione paperwork, explained in a few lines each. The definitions are written from the exam themes and the Highway Code, legislative decree 285 of 1992, and are deliberately short: where there is doubt the text of the rule governs, not this page.
How should this glossary be used?
Entries are alphabetical and each one has a stable identifier. The link
/en/glossario/#foglio-rosa opens the definition of foglio rosa directly, so a
single entry can be cited without pointing at the whole page.

A
- ADR ADR #
- The European agreement on the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. Drivers carrying such goods above the exemption limits must hold the ADR vocational training certificate, awarded after a course and an exam.
- Airbag Airbag #
- A cushion that inflates within milliseconds in a crash to soften contact between the body and hard cabin parts. It only protects when the seat belt is fastened, because the belt holds the occupant in the right position.
B
- Blood alcohol concentration Tasso alcolemico #
- The concentration of alcohol in the blood, measured in grams per litre. The general Italian limit is 0.5 g/l, while for novice drivers, drivers under 21 and professional drivers the limit is zero.
- Braking distance Spazio di frenata #
- The distance covered from the moment the brakes start to act until the vehicle stops. It grows with the square of speed, so doubling the speed makes it roughly four times longer.
- Built up area Centro abitato #
- A built-up group of buildings marked at its access roads by the start and end signs. Inside it the speed limit changes, along with the rules on parking and the use of the horn, and the traffic rules specific to urban roads apply.
C
- Carriageway Carreggiata #
- The part of the road used by moving vehicles, made up of one or more lanes and bounded by the edge lines. It excludes verges, pavements and central reservations.
- Category AM licence Patente AM #
- Entitlement to ride two-wheeled or three-wheeled mopeds up to 50 cc, or up to 4 kW electric, with a top speed of 45 km/h, and to drive light quadricycles. It can be taken from age 14 with a theory exam and a practical test.
- Category B licence Patente B #
- Entitlement to drive motor vehicles with a maximum laden mass up to 3,500 kg and no more than eight seats besides the driver. Towing a trailer is allowed within the mass limits set by the Codice. It is taken from age 18 with a theory exam and a driving test.
D
- Driver Certificate of Professional Competence CQC #

G
- Give way Dare la precedenza #
- The duty to let other road users pass without forcing them to slow down or change direction. Unlike a stop sign it does not always require halting, but the approach speed must allow yielding.
- Gross vehicle mass Massa complessiva #
- The maximum laden weight of the vehicle, including driver, passengers and load, shown on the registration document. It determines the licence category required and the applicable speed limits.
H
- Halting Arresto #
- A stop forced by traffic conditions, such as a red light, a queue or a give way obligation. It is not the driver's choice, so it applies even where stopping and parking are prohibited.
- Highway Code Codice della Strada #
- The law governing road traffic in Italy, introduced by Legislative Decree 285 of 1992 and amended several times. Its implementing regulation sets out the technical detail, including road signs.
L
- Lane Corsia #
- A longitudinal part of the carriageway, wide enough for a single line of vehicles. It may be a running lane, an acceleration or deceleration lane, a dedicated lane or a reserved lane. The hard shoulder is separate from the carriageway.
- Licence points Punti patente #
- A system giving each holder 20 points and deducting them for offences that carry a penalty point loss. When points reach zero the holder must sit a review test to keep the licence.
- Licence review Revisione della patente #
- A procedure requiring the holder to undergo medical checks, or to resit the theory exam, the driving test or both, where doubts arise about their medical or technical fitness. It is triggered for example when the licence points reach zero or after a serious crash.
- Licence suspension Sospensione della patente #
- A measure temporarily banning driving, for a period set by law or by the prefect according to the offence. Driving while suspended carries far heavier penalties.
- Licence withdrawal Ritiro della patente #
- The physical taking of the licence document by the police in cases set out in the Highway Code. The document is then sent to the competent authority, which decides what happens next.
- Limited traffic zone (ZTL) Zona a traffico limitato (ZTL) #
- An urban area where access and traffic are reserved for authorised categories during set hours. The entry points are signposted and often camera enforced.
M
- Maximum vehicle dimensions Sagoma limite #
- The maximum length, width and height permitted for a vehicle. For motor vehicles the width may not exceed 2.55 metres and the height 4 metres, beyond which an abnormal load authorisation is needed.
- Medical examination Visita medica #
- The check of physical and mental fitness required to obtain or renew a licence. It covers sight, hearing and general condition, and produces a certificate sent electronically to the Motorizzazione Civile.
- Ministerial question bank Quiz ministeriale #
- The official bank of statements to be judged true or false, approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, from which each exam sheet is drawn. The questions are organised into chapters matching the exam topics.
- MIT (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport) MIT #
- The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which sets licensing rules, approves the exam questions and publishes open data on driving licences.
- Motorizzazione Civile Motorizzazione Civile #
- The local office of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport handling licences, vehicle registration and tests. Each province reports to one office, which is where provincial differences in waiting times come from.
N
- Novice driver Neopatentato #
- Someone who has held a first licence for less than three years. Throughout those three years the limits are 100 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main extra-urban roads, a zero blood alcohol limit, and a power cap of 75 kW per tonne of kerb weight with an absolute 105 kW for category M1 cars (art. 117 comma 2 bis, as amended by law 177/2024, in force from 14 December 2024).
O
- Overtaking Sorpasso #
- The manoeuvre of passing another vehicle travelling in the same direction. It is banned on bends and crests where visibility is incomplete, at level crossings and wherever visibility is insufficient. On roads with at least two lanes in each direction, passing on bends and crests is allowed.
P
- Parking Sosta #
- A prolonged halt where the driver may leave the vehicle. It is prohibited where signs say so and in all the cases listed in the Highway Code, for example in front of vehicle access gates.
- Practical driving test Esame pratico #

- A candidate who applies for a licence directly at the Motorizzazione Civile without using a driving school. They must still practise with a qualified supervising passenger and book the tests themselves.
- Provisional licence (foglio rosa) Foglio rosa #

- Restraint system Sistema di ritenuta #
- The devices that restrain an occupant in a collision, in particular seat belts and child restraint systems. Children under 1.50 metres tall must be secured in an approved system suited to their weight.
- Road markings Segnaletica orizzontale #
- The lines, arrows and wording painted on the road surface to regulate traffic. A continuous line may not be crossed or straddled; a broken one may be, when the manoeuvre is safe.
- Roundabout Rotatoria #
- A one-way circular junction around a central island. Unless signs say otherwise, vehicles already circulating have priority, and the right indicator is used when leaving.
S
- Safe following distance Distanza di sicurezza #
- The gap to keep from the vehicle ahead so as to stop without hitting it. It depends on speed, road conditions, load and brake condition, and must be increased in rain, snow or poor visibility.
- Seat belt Cintura di sicurezza #
- A restraint device compulsory for driver and passengers, front and rear. It spreads crash forces over the strong parts of the body and prevents ejection from the cabin.
- Speed limit Limite di velocità #
- The maximum permitted speed on a stretch of road, set by law or by a sign. The general limits are 50 km/h in built up areas, 90 km/h on secondary rural roads, 110 km/h on main rural roads and 130 km/h on motorways.
- Stopping Fermata #

T
- Theory test Esame di teoria #
- A computer based test on the ministerial question bank, taken at the Motorizzazione Civile or at an approved driving school. It has a fixed time limit and a maximum number of permitted errors.
- Third party motor insurance (RCA) Assicurazione RCA #
- Compulsory motor liability insurance covering damage caused to third parties by the vehicle. Without valid cover the vehicle may not be driven, and the penalty includes seizure of the vehicle.
- Timing belt Cinghia di distribuzione #

- Vulnerable road user Utente debole della strada #
- Pedestrians, cyclists, children, older people and people with disabilities, that is those least protected in a collision. The Highway Code requires other drivers to take particular care around them.
W
- Warning sign Segnale di pericolo #
- A vertical sign, triangular with the point upwards and a red border, warning of a hazard ahead. It is not a prohibition: it requires the driver to slow down and pay closer attention.
